My Confluence instance is quite slow and in some cases just acting unexpectedly. I have no idea what the cause of this is.

We’ve heard some of our clients say that they have similar problems, so you’re not alone. Luckily, Atlassian has recently published what they call “Guardrails”. As explained by Andrzej Kotas, Product Manager for Jira Data Center, these are "“product-based documentation and strategic recommendations designed to educate and help you avoid reaching a tipping point where your instance might start to experience performance impacts”.
